A Peek into the Closet
Misha Matchette
Beauty in Chaos
This piece was inspired by the idea of love being explosive, a type of love that, no matter what, shines through the darkness. The goal for this two piece was to create two people in love who completely accept each other and themselves.
Blueprint of a Queer
In this piece I tried to capture some of the stereotypes of the queer community. I must admit that I definitely fit into several of these stereotypes.
Don't Erase Me
In the LGBT community, asexuals are the least recognized group of people. Ace erasure is one of the most common problems, with people being told that their sexuality doesn't exist, even by others in the community. This piece is done in the colors of the asexual flag.
Dysphoria
n. The condition of feeling one's emotional and psychological gender identity to be different from one's biological sex.
My goal for this piece was to convey the duality and confusion often found in transgender and gender-queer individuals.
Medicine of an LGBT Teen
The goal for this piece was to display things that LGBT teens are often told and experience as if it were medicine. Personally, I see flat design (the style of this piece) as a more happy style and I thought it would be interesting to mix it with a very serious and dark subject matter.
Pride
This piece was based on one of friends who is both Muslim and pansexual. She accepts herself, and thankfully, her family does as well. In this piece, the hijab is done in the colors of the pansexual flag to show that being Muslim and being part of the LGBT community are not mutually exclusive and people like my friend can be proud of themselves as both.
Should I?
This piece shows an LGBT person at their breaking point. The number shown on the phone is the number of the US Suicide Hotline, but the person has not yet pressed the call button. I hope this piece conveys the feeling of wondering if you are worth it and if you should reach out for help.
Walk Away
This piece was very mentally difficult for me to complete. The person with the umbrella is made up of the negative comments often told to bisexual men and women, some of which I have been told myself, despite not actually being bi. The colors represent those of the bi flag.
